What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a common disease that affects millions of women worldwide (around 10% of the female population), predominantly women of reproductive age but can also develop in adolescents and postmenopausal women.

The rate of endometriosis was found to increase with age from 12% in females aged 11-13 years to 45% in females aged 20-21 years.

Endometriosis is characterized by the presence of endometrial type tissue ( glands and stroma) outside the uterine cavity. Ectopic endometrial tissues are most commonly located in the dependent portions of the female pelvis (eg, posterior and anterior cul-de-sac, uterosacral ligaments, tubes, ovaries), but any organ system is potentially at risk such as bladder, rectum, even kidneys and lungs.

Endometriosis is caused by excess growth of endometrial tissue that is not shed during menstruation. It is an estrogen-dependent condition and often progressive, resulting in worsening pain and other symptoms over time.

Associated symptoms can severely impact in general, physical, mental and social well-being of women.

Main symptoms are pelvic pain, typically associated with monthly menstruation (dysmenorrheal), or dyspareunia and dysuria. In addition musculoskeletal pain symptoms may appear, specially in flanks, the lower back and thighs.

Wild Yam – Often used to help during menopause, menstrual irregularities and symptoms of PMS. Combined with chasteberry, Wild Yam reduces the symptoms of endometriosis.

How does endometriosis affect fertility?
